Robust Box Bounds: Throughput Guarantees for Closed Multiclass Queueing Networks with Minimal Stochastic Assumptions

چکیده
To use queueing theory to analyze real systems such as computer communications networks, we make assumptions that are strictly speaking untrue. The problem is especially severe for multiclass networks with FIFO service and greatly diiering service times. This paper provides an exact analysis for bounds, for cases with greatly relaxed assumptions. Service times can have general (IFR) distributions, diierent by class even at FIFO nodes. Routing can be arbitrary, including dependencies along the route, provided the number of visits to each node is a random variable. Only the mean service time and mean visit rates at nodes need be speciied. A new lower throughput bound is found which gives a minimum guaranteed throughput for each class; together with the familiar multiclass asymptotic upper bounds they give a convex feasible region in a multidimensional throughput space. A detailed analysis is given for systems with FIFO and innnite-server nodes, and the extension to processor-sharing nodes is described. Because the feasible region may be a complicated shape which is diicult to visualize, the results can be re-interpreted as a set of bounds on the separate throughputs. This is equivalent to a circumscribed rectangular region called the \Robust Box Bounds". Computation of these bounds is carried out by a novel technique based on interval arithmetic as implemented in BNR Prolog language. These bounds can be effectively used for the performance analysis of computer networks as well as other types of computing systems.

Robust Fluid Control of Multiclass Queueing Networks
This thesis applies recent advances in the field of robust optimization to the optimal control of multiclass queueing networks. We develop models that take into account the uncertainty of interarrival and service time in multiclass queueing network problems without assuming a specific probability distribution, while remaining highly tractable and providing insight into the corresponding optimal...
متن کاملComputation of Bounds and Performance Guarantees for Client-Server Systems Using a Queueing Network Model
Multiclass Queueing networks have been suggested by a number of researchers for the performance engineering of client-server systems. A number of implementation mechanisms such as software servers, locks in transaction processing, and critical sections make the application of existing analytic methods for queueing networks difficult for the performance analysis of client-server software and sys...
متن کاملThe Throughput Analysis of Product-Form Queueing Networks
Product-form closed queueing networks are widely-used analytical models for the performance analysis of computer and communication systems. Since the publication in 1963 of Jackson’s theorem, the first significant development in the theory of queueing networks, hundreds of papers have been devoted to the topic. Nevertheless, several important theoretical issues remain open. Among these, the eff...
متن کاملEmbedded Product-Form Queueing Networks and the Improvement of Performance Bounds for Petri Net Systems
This paper addresses the computation of upper bounds for the steady-state throughput of stochastic Petri net systems with immediate and generally distributed timed transitions. It is achieved through the use of a kind of decomposition of the whole net system. Results are obtained deeply bridging stochastic Petri net theory to untimed Petri net and queueing network theories. Previous results are...
متن کاملThe achievable region method in the optimal control of queueing systems; formulations, bounds and policies
We survey a new approach that the author and his co-workers have developed to formulate stochastic control problems (predominantly queueing systems) as mathematical programming problems. The central idea is to characterize the region of achievable performance in a stochastic control problem, i.e., find linear or nonlinear constraints on the performance vectors that all policies satisfy. We pres...
